The Athens-Big Fork Trail forms the steep, mountainous core of the Eagle Rock Loop, climbing over six major ridgelines in just 9 miles. This section is the loop’s most strenuous, with relentless ascents, rocky descents, and more than 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Trail visibility is limited in spots, and water sources can be scarce—so come prepared for this remote, demanding stretch. It’s considered the most challenging portion of the Eagle Rock Loop; however, in return, there are unforgettable panoramic views of the Ouachita National Forest that make every step worth the trek.
