There has always been a fountain on Marienplatz. The first, whose exact location is no longer known, dates back to 1318. In 1343, the "Citizens' Fountain", later also known as the "Market Fountain", was built on the site of today's Fish Fountain. It was replaced by the Fish Fountain designed by sculptor Konrad Knoll, which was completed between 1862 and 1865. Knoll's fountains were once decorated with bronze dolphins and lion heads spouting water.

The fish fountain is a popular meeting place on Marienplatz directly in front of the New Town Hall. It is also known for the annual purse washing and the so-called butcher's jump. The first fish fountain was built between 1862 and 1865, but the fountain has only existed in its current form since 1954 (source: muenchen.de).
