Visigothic Castrum of Puig Rom
The Visigothic village of Puig Rom is in the municipality of Roses (Alt Empordà) on the top of Puig de les Muralles, a hill located north of Puig Rom and east of the urban center of Roses. It is surrounded by the buildings that make up the urbanization of Puig Rom, except for the north and east slopes. It is one of the few and best preserved Visigothic period enclosures in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Its purpose was defensive and strategic.
It is a fortified enclosure, whose wall follows the top of the hill, giving it an irregular plan. The wall, with a slightly sloping section in some sections, has a maximum height of between three and four meters, especially in the east and south sectors which are the best preserved, and a thickness of about two meters. It consists of a double wall built with medium-sized unhewn stones, mostly granite, dry-joined and arranged in irregular rows. Some rows have inclined stones and, in some sections, the opus spicatum technique is observed. The internal filling of this double wall is made up of rubble, gravel and earth. Access to the interior of the enclosure was on the south side, through a door flanked by two square-plan towers, one of which, the one on the east, was added after the construction of the wall. Following the walled perimeter in an easterly direction there are the remains of another tower also square-plan. The interior of the enclosure is divided into two habitat areas, arranged on either side of the access door. To the west are a series of walls attached to the wall, which delimit some more or less square-plan living quarters. These dwellings are delimited to the north by a street or passage area. The walls are built with unhewn stones tied dry and forming rows, with some sections in opus spicatum. There are also several spherical silos, excavated in the rock. In the eastern sector there are also several dwellings attached to the wall, although they are much more destroyed by the outcrop of rock at a higher level. They also have several silos excavated in the subsoil
