Few hills are as genuinely loved as Suilven. Its isolated island-mountain stature, protruding from the low cnoc-and-loch landscape of Assynt, shares more with the monoliths of Monument Valley than a typical Scottish hill. But it is this unique double-summited, steep-sided, narrow-ridged and entirely unmistakable form that never fails to win the hearts of hillwalkers.

Rising up 731m from the 'empty lands' surrounding it, Suilven is the gem of Assynt. The mountain is so distinctive in shape (in spite of the fact that it changes dramatically depending which angle you look at it from). The Torridonian sandstone tiers make it very distinctive. The summit is at the north-west end of a ridge which is 2km in length. Being the only two people on the mountain in calm weather at sunrise was a moment I'll never forget - I shed a tear or two at the sheer beauty of it all. From the summit you can enjoy views over other mountains including Stac Pollaidh, Cul Mor, Cul Beag and Canisp (to name a few).

This is a bucket list mountain for any serious hiker. I did this route from Lochinver which is 20k round trip. A really enjoyable route with an exposed ledge, just before the ascent up to Caisteal Liath. It is notorious for its wind speed which is a beast, depending on the weather.

Long walk in from Lochinver on a wide sometimes boggy path. steep climb up onto the saddle and some nice rocks to scramble over on way to summit, view for miles on a good day. Allow 7-10 hours to do this trip in a day. Take plenty of water and snacks.

Reaching the summit of Suilven is definitely a high point in any walker's career. It may not be very high, but it is a long way in a remote area and it is unlike any other mountain in these Isles.
