A cave on the Staffelberg is connected to the Staffelberg legend. The quarrels who did a lot of good for the population in the Main Valley are said to have lived here. Similar to the more well-known brownies, however, they were chased away by a miserly farmer's wife. The elves occasionally stole some of the dumplings they coveted from the housewives' cooking pots. So when people started counting the dumplings before putting them in the pots, the offended dwarfs left the Staffelberg and had a ferryman take them across the Main. As a reward, they only gave him some good advice along the way, such as: "Eat stone fruit and pinella, then your heart will not swell". A fountain was erected in front of the entrance to the Obermain Therme in Bad Staffelstein as a memorial to the missing quarrels from the Staffelberg.

They were welcome guests among people because they did a lot of work, helped with illnesses and gave advice on all difficult tasks. The Querkels preferred to come to the villages on days when the farmers' wives cooked dumplings. Because the raw potato dumplings, still a Franconian specialty today, were the little wretch's favorite dish. Because they loved eating the dumplings and couldn't get enough of them, they sometimes even stole one from the cooking pot. The women knew this and tolerated it tacitly, as they also had some advantages from the quarrels. But a stingy farmer's wife didn't allow the Querkeln the gift and so she counted out her dumplings before they were put in the pot. The Querkele noticed this immediately and stayed away from human dwellings. One day a wailing was heard from Staffelberg and that same night the good dwarves moved away from Staffelberg. They left their mountain with bag and baggage and moved to the Main valley. When they reached the banks of the Main near Hausen, they had the ferryman take them across the river. They moved up the Banzberg without a word and were never seen again.

When walking around the plateau, the hiker comes across a wooden railing.
The legendary "Querkeles Cave" is three meters below.
However, a small climbing passage down is necessary for a detour to the same, which of course requires a certain physical dexterity and fitness.
Caution is of course required here, especially since the stones, which have been misused countless times as "steps", are now quite smooth.
Even if you are in good physical condition, you should refrain from visiting the Querkeles cave when it is raining and wet.
