The sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca (San Lócca in Bologna) is a basilica dedicated to the Catholic Marian cult and stands on the Guardia hill, a partly wooded spur at 280 m a.s.l. southwest of the historic center of Bologna. It is an important sanctuary in the history of the city, since its origins a destination for pilgrimages to venerate the icon of the Virgin and Child called "of San Luca". The sanctuary can be reached from porta Saragozza through a long and characteristic porticoed street, which bypasses via Saragozza with the monumental Arco del Meloncello (1732) and then climbs steeply up to the sanctuary.

Beautiful basilica, in a strategic point as regards the panorama, in the most beautiful area of the Bolognese hills. Simply a myth.

One of the major attractions of Bologna. Climbing San Luca is a feat but also a great satisfaction. For the less trained, you can go up via Casaglia (longer but less steep). Furthermore, it is possible to go down the dirt paths towards Casalecchio.

Have you made the way of the gods? You got the track, is it really that hard? Are there alternative paved roads near the original route? Thanks if you can answer

The covered footpath begins to the west of the large urban district. It climbs about 200 meters to the church - Madonna di San Lucca. a very nice church in which you can go to the roof via a narrow spiral staircase with a view of Bologna and the surrounding area. We went up over Colle di Casaglia by bike. That was a few km more, but the short distance is quite steep and without an e-bike, steep pushing is the order of the day

The Sanctuary of San Luca, which stands on Colle della Guardia, has been a symbol of Bologna for centuries as well as an object of religious worship. It is connected to the city center by a road that, starting from Porta Saragozza, winds for four kilometers in a portico that, with its over 600 arches, is the longest in the world and, together with the other porticos of the city, was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Passed every year since 1433, during Ascension Week, by a procession that leads the Byzantine Madonna and Child to the cathedral, the portico was built starting in 1674. The construction of the church of the sanctuary, dating back to the 18th century, was later, replacing a previous 15th-century building.
From the sanctuary you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, the opening of the panoramic terrace starting in 2017 allows, at a height of approximately 42 metres above the level of Colle della Guardia (300 metres above sea level), to admire a unique 180-degree view of Bologna, from the hills, up to the centre and Casalecchio di Reno.

The title of the sanctuary "Madonna di San Luca" refers to an old Byzantine icon depicting the Mother of God, which has been venerated here for centuries. Since the Evangelist Luke in his version of the "Good News" (this is the translation/meaning of the term "Gospel") not only describes the life, deeds and statements of Jesus Christ himself, but also repeatedly mentions the Mother of God Mary (starting with the angel's announcement to her that she is to give birth to the Son of God), images of the Virgin Mary were also often assumed to have been painted by the hand of the Evangelist Luke in the Middle Ages. It was a common idea at the time that he not only described her in words in the Gospel, but also painted her. Even if, as here in Bologna, the venerated image naturally dates from a much later era, the legend of the origin according to Luke has remained.

Yes, last year we went via degli dei with bikes and bags and it was tough for us, maybe we took the wrong route bo!!. I don't have the track, my daughter has it. It was beautiful, unforgettable (especially the flight into a puddle) and difficult.
