The product of an interaction of limestone, water and carbon dioxide.

Limestone is extremely slightly soluble in pure water. In carbon dioxide-containing water, the solubility of lime increases greatly.

In the pores of humus soil, the carbon dioxide content is particularly high due to biodegradation processes.

When rain seeps into humus-rich soil over limestone, it absorbs a lot of carbon dioxide. In the underlying cracked limestone then quickly creates a lime-rich solution.

Where such lime-rich water exits as a source, this water releases dissolved carbon dioxide into the environment. In addition, water also evaporates. Both lead to the elimination of dissolved lime. Plant pads are slowly covered with a lime crust - they petrify. This explains the coarse-pored structure of the tuff.

Tufa is easy to work with, which is why it used to be a building material in the past.
