Here the Seeve is divided. Part of the water runs over the weir in the old riverbed to the Elbe. The other part flows into the Seevekanal, which ends in the Harburg inland port and there used to drive the castle mill and supplies the inland port with water.

The water level of the Seeve is regulated at the weir in Maschen and valuable lake water is diverted via the Seevekanal towards Harburg's inland port. It is a centuries-old water law. In many European countries, such rights have been called into question on the occasion of the water framework directive requirements for the improvement of our aquatic habitats - not here so far.

Fishing is prohibited on a length of 50m above and 70m below the weir system, i.e. the Seeve and Seevekanal (fish sanctuary!).

There is a fish ladder here to enable fishing to climb in spite of the weir. After being redesigned in the 1980s, it was changed from a "sand trap" to a diverse body of water and has since worked for at least some of the water hikers.
