A closer look at the Bishop's Mill in Coesfeld reveals its unusually solid construction. This suggests that the building was originally built as a fortified or refuge castle. The foundations date back to the 12th century, making the mill the oldest building in the city of Coesfeld.

Until 1598, the mill was owned by the Bishop of Münster and was then sold to the Barons von Graes zur Loburg. In 1624, it was leased to a miller for the first time.

After extensive renovation work around the turn of the millennium, it is now a fully functional mill with an overshot waterwheel used to generate electricity. With equipment dating from around 1900, the Bishop's Mill is an exciting combination of historical evidence and modern technology. The mill is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and guided tours are offered.
