Aschwarden windmill
There had been a windmill here since 1800, probably a post mill, licensed for grinding barley and flour. In 1850, Martin Kayser replaced it with a two-story thatched gallery mill with a compass rose and louvre blades. In 1896, the mill burned down due to a lightning strike. When it was rebuilt, the drive system was made of steel and the outer cladding of sheet metal. The high costs of the reconstruction led to the mill being put up for auction in 1900. The new owner, Georg Stegie, had no luck at first. The wooden blades broke down in storms. The newly made blades burned in their storage area before they could be assembled. The iron blades were installed in 1922. A diesel engine, and from 1923 an electric motor, provided driving power when there was no wind. The milling material came from the surrounding area and by ship from Bremen to the Aschwarden sluice, where it was loaded onto horse-drawn carts. In 1935 Stegie sold it to the Köster family. The condition of the mill was bad. Rats danced on the grinding floors. Despite the tireless efforts of Hinrich Köster, the mill head later stopped turning. With the help of the district, the mill was restored in 1962 and 1980, and during another restoration in 2004 the mill cap was overhauled and the wings, roller ring and compass rose were replaced. It is operational again. Due to its location behind the winter dike, it is one of the landmarks for shipping on the Lower Weser.
