The silhouette of the tower is considered the architectural landmark of the airport. In 1995, the Supervisory Board decided to replace the old, only 18-meter tower from the early days. He was no longer high enough due to newly built buildings. The design of the architectural team Behnisch und Partner prevailed in 1990 in a limited architectural competition. The new 48 meter high tower is visible from afar. Directly below the glass observation cockpit, the technology for air traffic control, worth around 17 million marks at that time, is housed in a closed cuboid. Overall, the project cost about 30 million marks. The original design had to be revised because the space required was reduced by a move of the approach control in the radar center Langen near Frankfurt. In November 1998, air traffic controllers of the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) moved into the tower and the glass office wing on the ground. [21]
