It's the only viable alternative when coming from the Rioni river valley (north) to go to Tskaltubo without passing by Kutaisi. It's a good road, with few very steep segments (especially at the top), built for the maintenance of the electricity pylons. The descent in some points is very steep, I'm not sure I'd climb it from the other way around (from Tskaltubo to Opurhkheti). The last part before Tskaltubo is paved in cement and passes through amazing farmers' houses and gardens. Many dogs (both stray and guarding dogs) but nothing to worry about.
