Konradsburg, first mentioned in 1021, once served to protect the imperial estate of the Harz Mountains. However, the visitor searches in vain for a keep or other architectural features that suggest a military fortification. And there are no defense towers or a palace to be seen either. Nevertheless, the venerable building is surrounded by a mystical aura. The area, which has offered people protection and a place to live since the Bronze Age, has always been sacred land. Even the Germans worshiped their pagan gods at this point. In the course of Christianization, it was customary to erect sacred buildings explicitly on the sites of pagan places of worship. Therefore, the visitor gets an insight into the church life in the Harz rather than into the equipment of a military fortification.
