Together with Hämeen Härkätie, it is one of the oldest roads in Finland. Huovintie is thought to date back to prehistoric times in the 9th century, when it was used for wilderness and trade expeditions. It originally connected the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki River with the settlements of the Pyhäjärvi region and the upper reaches of the Aurajoki River.
