The path to the Fohlenhaus is one of the most scenic sections of the Lone Valley and is ideal for a Sunday afternoon stroll. Directly in front of the cave there is a barbecue area and seating, making the foal house a nice destination for a family picnic in summer.
The distance to the Fohlenhaus from the Salzbühl hiking car park is only approx. 2 km and is therefore also suitable for children for a walk.
Bicycle: At the Fohlenhaus follow the cycle path (ADK2) up to the right. After about 3/4 of the climb, take the first junction (Nuernbergerweg or ADK2) and follow it until you are back in the Lone Valley. When you arrive in the Lone valley, turn left again either on the forest path or directly follow the course of the Lone upstream. Here the Lone has been beautifully renatured over long stretches.
It is also possible to start the hike at the parking lot at the Holzkircher Bridge (the western parking lot on the map) and from there take a slightly longer walk towards the Fohlenhaus. Alternatively, you can also take a hike from there towards Breitingen.
The route begins at the Salzbühl hiking car park. Before the bridge, turn right onto the hiking trail (ADK2). After just a few meters you will see the “Salzbühl” natural monument on the right, an impressive rock face with a small rocky outcrop.
We continue directly along the Lone towards the Fohlenhaus. Passing a small wetland biotope halfway, you will reach the foal house after a short hike.
The foal house consists of two small caves next to each other. With a little imagination you can see a foal in the rock formation from afar, hence the name foal house. Remains of prehistoric settlements were also found in the Fohlenhaus, even if they are not as famous as the spectacular finds in the caves downstream.
At the bend in the river at the level of the Lone valley, the water is crystal clear and at the small bridge you can listen to the splashing of the water and let your feet and soul dangle. From here you can end your hike on the other side back towards the hiking car park as a circular route.
