During the Nazi era, there were at least 30 forced labor camps in what is now the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. The largest was in Kaulsdorf-Süd, at Kaulsdorfer Straße 90. The site, originally owned by Jews, was expropriated. Actually built as accommodation for German workers who were to be deployed on projects of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the camp was initially used as a transit camp for Wolhynien Germans. In 1940 a prisoner of war camp for French soldiers was established. On April 30, 1942, the camp was occupied with "Eastern workers" who had to work for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Up to 1,400 Russians and Ukrainians, including many women and children, lived a miserable life here.

On eight exhibition boards, the open-air exhibition recalls the history of the site, the victims of the camp and their fate.

When you pass the 'Lager Kaulsdorfer Straße 90' memorial, you know where you are. In the east, where Berlin's industry is traditionally located. Why? Because the top people could not be expected to smell the nasty smell of industry that was blowing with the west winds. - During World War II, women and forced laborers abandoned production. 500,000 people were exploited as forced laborers during the war. That makes up 20% of the workforce. Most of the camps had space for 100 to 200 people. The largest camps with up to 3000 people were in Adlershof and Falkensee. Here, on Kaulsdorfer Strasse, there were more than one and a half thousand forced laborers in 1943. - Time to take a breath and remember the battered creatures.
