The oak cross once carried a carved wooden Christ.
Since November 1950 it has replaced a cross from 1566 erected to mark the territorial borders (Franchimont and Stavelot). In 1605, on the initiative of the Prior of Malmedy, the cross was replaced to end border disputes in this sector. Hence the name "prior cross" (in several religious communities that do not know an abbot, the prior is the head of the monastery). Later this cross disappears again. In 1885 remains of the cross were found.

This stone obelisk, which marks the old border between Prussia and Belgium, is located between the Baraque Michel and the Fontaine Périgny, near the Cross of the Prior. To preserve it, the stone column was reinforced by a metal frame.
