Battenberg Castle probably originally served to protect the Murbach fiefdom, which included the towns of Kleinkarlbach, Bobenheim/Berg and Weisenheim/Berg. It was first mentioned in 1359 in connection with the Counts of Leiningen. It is assumed that the castle was built around 1240 by Count Friedrich III of Leiningen at almost the same time as Neuleiningen Castle. The ring wall has been preserved, on the south side there is a gun tower, probably from the 16th century, and on the north corner a remnant of the gatehouse. At the back of this there is a small residential building from the 18th or early 19th century, on the east side there is a substructure of the residential building with a high vaulted cellar and a stair tower in the middle of the courtyard, which was converted into a garden pavilion with an iron staircase and balcony in the 19th century.

The Battenberg with its 300 m above the Rhine valley was inhabited early on; Paleolithic sites, pot shards, coins and a burial ground are evidence of this. Count Friedrich III. zu Leiningen had >>> Neuleiningen Castle >> Battenberg Castle <<< as a fortress (= fortification). Both castles were destroyed in 1690 (wars of succession).

Battenberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Leininger Sporn on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. It is located on the edge of the local community of the same name in the Bad Dürkheim district (Rhineland-Palatinate) and is one of the three castles on the upper Eckbach that date back to the early days of the Leininger family. The other two are Altleiningen and Neuleiningen.
Battenberg Castle is classified as a cultural monument.

According to the information board on site, the place has been inhabited without interruption for over 3,000 years. That is remarkable. Otherwise, there are hardly any records of the place.
There was also a castle there (at least since the 13th century). Remains of castle-like buildings from the last stage of construction have been preserved. In 1808, the castle became private property as part of the auction of the Leiniger estates.

"Today the ruins are privately owned, but are largely open to the public because of the restaurant business. The exposed location allows a wide view to the east over the Rhine plain, Bergstrasse and Odenwald."
