😎The attentive hiker who wanders through this interesting forest area will often come across boundary stones with serial numbers and the year 1735 engraved on them. They also show a lion walking on one side and a jumping horse on the other as heraldic animals. This also includes the well-known stone no. 100 at this striking crossroads between Steigerthal and Stempeda in the northern part of the Old Stolberg. Many a local friend will have wondered about the meaning of these boundary stones without finding an explanation. Those familiar with local history know that they are the border markers between the former electorates of Saxony and Hanover.

The ownership situation changed several times after 1735. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Saxony had to cede its share to Prussia, and after the war of 1866, the Hanoverian part also became Prussian. Since then, the old border line has only had the significance of a district border between the provincial Saxon district of Sangerhausen and the district of Ilfeld. The district of Ilfeld originally emerged from the Hanoverian exclave Amt Hohnstein. It was later united with the provincial Saxon district of Grafschaft Hohenstein.
