From 1985 to 1995 the Batavia shipyard in Lelystad reconstructed the Batavia, a merchant ship from the Dutch Golden Age. The huge sailing ship was carefully handcrafted to be as true to the original as possible. Today it is anchored here and can be visited.

The Batavia was a sailing ship of the Dutch East India Company. It struck a reef off Australia on its first voyage in 1629 and sank. Mutiny and massacres broke out among the survivors of the shipwreck. A replica of the ship was built from 1985 to 1995 at the Batavia shipyard in Lelystad.

The Bataviawerf is part of the Batavialand Museum. It consists of a shipyard where you can see with your own eyes how ships were built in the Golden Age. On the Batavia, a reconstruction of a VOC ship from the 17th century, you can experience for yourself what it was like to live in the Golden Age. Inside there are several exhibitions about old shipbuilding. The Batavia Shipyard brings history back to the surface.
