The sculpture on the median of Tauentzienstrasse was created in 1987 by Brigitte and Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff. It consists of chromium-nickel steel tubes and symbolizes the situation of divided Berlin with its intertwined but separately set up two parts. Four-part and altogether eight meter high plastic "Berlin" on the median of the Tauentzienstraße between the Europa-Center and the department store Des Westens.
This sculpture was created by the artist couple Matschinsky-Denninghoff on the occasion of the 'Sculpture Boulevard' exhibition organized by the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, which was realized in 1987 to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary.
It soon became a symbol of the divided city. After reunification, perception changed and the metal sculpture was interpreted as a symbol of reunification.
