What you learn by hiking so everything. In the past I only knew the Niederwald near Rüdesheim (Niederwalddenkmal / Germania) and considered this a proper name. Only through recurring names elsewhere and by signs I learned that a coppice is a forest in which felled beech and oak trees from the tree stumps again and again and thus form rather bushy, low deciduous forests.

Here you go through low or crippled (oak) forest.
The bark was needed for the Gerberlohe. Other trees were always cut in the fall to have twigs for the winter furnace fire. For this reason, these trees never grew to their final size and was called due to their short stature as cripple oaks or cripples, the forest as a coppice.
