Niederfeldsee opened in Essen-Altendorf in 2014. Here, the route of the Rhenish Railway ran in a curve around Altendorf and had here a branch point to the north to the ironworks Phoenix and the colliery Carl in Altenessen. About ways the lake is completely to circumnavigate. This does not require a forced march, because the path along the shore is almost exactly one kilometer long. And the bridge in the middle is not even used as a shortcut. Some joggers and walkers just go back several laps. There are two high-altitude observation balconies on the ends of the former embankment under the tracks to the west and east, and sunbathing areas all around the lake. The many benches are often used for a break on the lake. However, the most striking and new landmark of the district is undoubtedly the approximately 50-meter-long bridge of the cycle path across the lake, which has a striking red steel girder in the shape of square corners in the middle.

Boating, swimming, model boating or other water sports are taboo here. If somebody falls into the water who can not swim, there are long wooden boards in racks around the lake. A bit bureaucratic these shabby boards are a little amusing called "rescue equipment".

The bike path on the Rhenish railway runs directly over the lake. This forms a rest stop on the route. On the track run the theme bike paths Emscher-Park-Radweg and the Tour Essen Experience West.

The Niederfeldsee is located directly on the RS1 and is a popular resting place with café / bistro "Radmosphäre" and bicycle rental / service "Zweiradstation". The entire area around the lake and the waterfront are beautifully designed, with stairs to the lake and lookout points.

In good weather at the weekend, the lake is therefore well-frequented and the "fast track" does not live up to its name. But the deceleration at this point is worthwhile.
