HISTORY – Cinema arrived in Normandy barely a year after its discovery in Paris, in December 1895. A Lumière cinema opened in Caen from mid-November to mid-December 1896, in a room at the Café de la Bourse (now Printemps). The program was packed: twelve fifteen-minute screenings per day. That same year, cinemas made their debut in Lisieux for the Christmas fair.

This was the heyday of the fairgrounds. Films were seen in traveling booths that were set up at all the fairgrounds in the region. But by the early 1910s, cinema owners had begun building permanent theaters.

Aside from the short-lived "Cinéma Chantant" (Singing Cinema), it wasn't until the late 1920s that cinematography made its debut in Bayeux. Opened in the Impasse Glatigny, a few steps from the cathedral, the "Cinéma Normandie" was not warmly welcomed by everyone...

The Society of Antiquaries of Normandy, which defends the region's historical heritage, protested on March 1, 1929, "against the conversion of this space into a cinema." What worried the Society of Antiquaries was that the establishment was "built of iron and brick, and the main entrance would be facing the cathedral," meaning a stone's throw from the City Library and the Tapestry Exhibition Hall (then located in the former Bishop's Palace).

Isn't it annoying, the Society asked, that the medieval masterpiece was separated from the young cinema "only by a small building where the contractor would install kitchens"? Such an installation would be "dangerous for the safety of the Tapestry and the Library's collections." Worse, it could "destroy the artistic character of the area surrounding the cathedral, a listed building." The Society immediately requested the opening of an administrative investigation, even involving the Commission of Historical Monuments.

Ninety years later, this small "iron and brick" space, a testament to the early days of cinema in Normandy, deserves to be protected as a historic monument in its turn...
