Due to its small population size, the breed fell into obscurity before being rediscovered in the 1980s. Since then, the largest herds live in Austria and Hungary – including in the area of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, where they perform important conservation work: by trampling and browsing, they keep vegetation short and prevent bushes and trees from becoming overgrown. Through their extensive sand baths, they also create open areas and thus valuable habitats for rare sand-dwelling insects.
