The Saints of Chania – “Οι Εν Χανίοις Άγιοι”
This luminous gold-leaf icon depicts the “All Saints of Chania” – a pantheon of holy figures with connections to Western Crete. It follows the traditional Byzantine iconographic style and includes:
Bishops, monks, martyrs, and ascetics from different centuries.
The phrase “ΙΩΝ ΕΝ ΧΑΝΙΟΙΣ” confirms that these are saints associated with the Chania region, many of whom were martyred during Turkish rule or lived ascetic lives in the mountains and caves of Crete.
The upper centre shows Christ Pantocrator, enthroned among angels, receiving the souls of the righteous.
This icon is a visual affirmation of the island’s unbroken spiritual lineage, stretching from early Christianity through Ottoman resistance, right to modern Orthodox witness.
