Kestert lies on the right bank of the Rhine in the Loreley Valley.
Through a donation in 755, Fulda Abbey acquired land (mostly vineyards) located in "Marcu Bodobigrinse ultra Rhenum ad Castrionis." Kestert was first mentioned in documents as "ad Castrionis" (Latin). This name, as well as coins and wall remains from Roman times found at the "Kirchenköppel" site in the last century, suggest that a town may have been founded here in the early centuries as a Roman outpost on the right bank of the Rhine.
