    The Stone Church can currently only be reached via poorly accessible paths.
    From Themar you can get halfway up the mountain.
    From Henfstädt you first have to find your way and fight your way through wild vegetation.

      The ruin of the Stone Church, before the Reformation, was dedicated to a significant pilgrimage chapel and to the saint Ottilie, patron saint of the eyes. The water for healing is said to have been drawn from the well of the Ottilie spring that has been preserved.

      The ruin stands on a basalt cone. Until the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th century basalt was mined here in a quarry.

          The Stone Church stands on the basalt summit of the Stone Mountain. It is believed to be a pre-Christian place of worship, which was built with a chapel during the Christianization. This was dedicated to Saint Ottilie and pilgrims came here to wash themselves with the water from the nearby spring. Only a wall remains of the church, but this is very impressive simply because there was a modern quarry underneath it. The mighty basalt wall on which the chapel stands was left standing, which gives the church an impressive size.

          A warning to anyone interested: the ascent and descent up the mountain are quite steep and narrow. The path from Henfstädt is very overgrown. After my own exploration, I would advise against a visit at the moment.

            The Steinhaug desert is in the outskirts of the village of Henfstädt in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia.
            Steinhaug was mentioned in a document as Steinhoug bey Henfstädt as early as 890.
            The desert is in the vicinity of the ruin "Steinerne Kirche" near the Ottilien spring and not far from the village of Henfstädt.
            After 1300, many villages fell desolate, e. B. as a result of devastating epidemics.
