On the summit plateau of the Erpeler Ley stands a wooden cross erected to commemorate the victims of the battle for the Remagen Bridge. From here, one enjoys a panoramic view of the Siebengebirge mountains with Unkel in the foreground, across the Golden Mile on the left bank of the Rhine, with the Roman city of Remagen and the estuary of the Ahr River, to the colorful city of Linz am Rhein. On the southern slope, a block of trachyte weighing 80 hundredweight commemorates the first flight of a steerable zeppelin across the Rhine in 1909. The pilot was Count von Zeppelin himself.

The summit cross on the Erberler commemorates the fighting for the Ludendorff Bridge near Remagen.
On March 7, 1945, American units of the 9th Armored Division unexpectedly encountered the Ludendorff Bridge near Remagen – and found it still intact.
The Germans had placed explosive charges, but the fuse partially failed:
The first blast damaged the bridge but did not destroy it.

The Americans reacted swiftly and stormed the bridge under heavy fire.
At 4:00 p.m., they had reached the eastern bank of the Rhine – the first Allied bridgehead east of the Rhine!
On March 17, 1945, the Ludendorff Bridge finally collapsed on its own, presumably due to the previous blast, artillery hits, and overloading. By this time, however, the Americans had already built five pontoon bridges.
