The highest point of the vast moorland plateau of Bleaklow, Bleaklow Head sits at 2,077 feet (633 m) and is both a Hewitt and a Nuttall. The plateau is linked to its cousin, Kinder Scout via Snake Pass to the south and enjoys a similar rugged peaty terrain. Thanks to its position on the western edge of the moor, you can enjoy fantastic views to the west from the summit cairn.

This rugged moorland plateau affords a real sense of solitude and breathtaking panoramic views. Bleaklow Head, standing at 2,077 feet (633 m) high, is one of three summits on this plateau and is marked by a huge cairn. You experience excellent views over the peat bog and gritstone landscape here.

Dan has given a great info spread on Bleaklow Head. Suffice to say that this place is also a UK designated Nuttall along with nearby Higher Shelf Stones and Kinder Scout. Bleaklow Head is aptly named however as it is impressively bleak up there. However a decent hike and easily accessible from Snake Pass.

Park up at the summit of Snake Pass and then follow the Pennine Way to the Trig Point. Weather is pretty changeable but if you are lucky you can get good views to Manchester and Sheffield on the way up.

Take in the crash site for the B29 Superfortress ‘Overexposed’ whilst you there. It’s a very solemn and eerie place. Debris is strewn over quite a large area. Unfortunately 13 US Airmen lost their lives.

It’s very wet and boggy so make sure your boots are waterproofed and would suggest bringing some waterproof over trousers too!

Keep your wits about you when walking from Higher Shelf Stones as it can be quite boggy. Take additional socks with you. I went in July 2022 and sank to the top of my walking boots for most of the distance between the 2 Ethels.

One of the more remote summits in the Peak District, Bleaklow can definitely live up to its name! The weather can change quickly up here, leaving you with zero visibility, and the ground is wet and very boggy in places. The Pennine Way runs past but is quite faint in places so take care if visiting.
