At the Mellingburger lock the lock basin with the two weirs (former lock gates) still exists today.

The city hall lock and Schaartor lock in the mouth area of the Alster to the Elbe serve in addition to the regulation of the water levels of the shipping connection for Alster ships, barges and pleasure boats between the Elbe and the Outer Alster.

The locks and dams of the Alster serve today essentially the preservation of the - Hamburg distinctive - river landscape of Oberalster, Außenal and Binnenalster.
