The flooded meadows of Žemaitiškė, stretching along the shores of Lake Kretuonas, are characterized by an abundance of protected bird species that breed here, such as: black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), black tern (Chlidonias niger), greylag duck (Anas strepera), quail (Coturnix coturnix), corncrake (Porzana porzana), corncrake (Crex crex), wagtail (Gallinago media), sandpiper (Limosa limosa) and others. This is a newly forming natural area – a bird habitat that appeared on the site of once reclaimed meadows. Over time, man-made drainage systems began to collapse, which is why areas of swampy meadows formed in the place of the former Vajuonėlė stream bed.
