The Staffelsee is a shallow, partly boggy lake with a total of seven islands (Wörth, Buchau, Grosse Birke, Mühlwörth, Small Birch, Gradeneiland and Jakobsinsel) right on the edge of the Alps.
The lake has an area of about 7.5 sq km, is at most 40 m deep and has a circumference of almost 20 km. The main inflow and outflow is the Ach, the average duration of the full water exchange is around 1.3 years. Like the neighboring Riegsee, so has the Staffelsee its origins in the last ice age.
