Wismar's Town Hall is one of the most striking buildings in the old town and a significant example of neoclassical architecture in Northern Germany. It stands on the market square, one of the largest in Northern Germany, and, together with the surrounding gabled houses, forms the historic center of the Hanseatic city.

The current town hall was built between 1817 and 1819 according to designs by the architect Johann Georg Barca. It replaced an older Gothic building that had partially collapsed in the 18th century. The simple, symmetrical façade with its columns and arched windows reflects the stylistic shift from the Middle Ages to the clear formal language of Neoclassicism.

The interior houses prestigious halls and historic rooms, which today house exhibitions on Wismar's city history and administrative tradition. Parts of the medieval predecessor building have been preserved in the basement and can be visited as part of guided tours.

The town hall symbolizes Wismar's transformation over the centuries – from a powerful Hanseatic city to today's UNESCO World Heritage site.

On the north side of Wismar's market square is the Hanseatic city's town hall. It was built in 1819. The town hall is a neoclassical plastered building constructed on the remains of a building dating back to 1319.

The Hanseatic city's market square, with an area of 10,000 square meters, is one of the largest in Northern Germany. On its north side is the town hall – a neoclassical building designed by Barca.

In 1807, the left wing of the late Gothic predecessor building collapsed. According to plans by Johann Georg Barca, court and country architect of Ludwigslust, the town hall was rebuilt in the neoclassical style between 1817 and 1819. The still usable Gothic remains, including those in the basement, were incorporated into the new building.

It still functions as a town hall today.
