The ruins in their current form owe the castle to the destruction by the House of Wettin in the 15th century, the construction of Frauenstein Castle next door and the associated disuse. A town fire in the 18th century severely damaged both the castle and the palace. Since the castle was no longer used, it was not rebuilt. However, the "Dicker Merten" residential tower from the 13th century and the 1.50 m thick ring wall have been preserved to this day. Other preserved rooms are the cellar, kitchen, castle chapel, prison, two rooms and several vaults. A support association is trying to preserve the castle.

The Frauenstein castle ruins can be visited from May to October. The castle is closed during the winter months. The Gottfried Silbermann Museum is open all year round, Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The following admission prices currently apply for the castle and the Gottfried Silbermann Museum: adults €3.50, reduced €2.50, children €1.50, families €10.00, group discounts are also available. Private photo permission costs €1.50, commercial €20.00.
The Silbermann Museum has since been relocated from the castle and given its own building on the market square.

There are several legends surrounding the castle ruins. The reality is that Elector Prince "Friedrich the Meek" had to besiege and bombard his own castle in 1438 in order to end the inheritance dispute with Count von Dohne. The castle's commander, Captain Zeisig, was beheaded on this summit for "resisting the elector." There are also said to have been further executions of storks and finches.
