The Seifersdorf Castle in the town of the same name, Seifersdorf near Radeberg, north of the Dresden city limits in the Bautzen district, is a castle built by the von Haugwitz family around 1530, which was rebuilt from 1818 to 1822 according to the plans of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the style of neo-Gothic. Initially, it was tower hill castles made of wood and stone that were surrounded by water all around. The knights estate with the manor house from 1750 that belonged to it until 1945 belonged to the castle and is now privately owned.

The castle is currently being renovated, but the castle park alone is worth a visit.

It is well laid out with lots of rhododendrons and great meadows where the early bloomers are currently showing.

                Definitely include in the hike.

The palace and park may not be magnificent, but they are worth seeing and relaxing. A real insider tip 👌

A short visit is always worthwhile. Even if it's only in the castle garden.

In 1747, after the death of the last Lord von Grünrod, Prime Minister Heinrich Graf von Brühl (1700-1763) was succeeded by King Augustus III. enfeoffed with the manor and castle. In 1750 the tenant house was built in the manor. Heinrich Graf von Brühl died in 1763. His property was seized for alleged high treason. It was not until 1774, after several inheritance comparisons, that the four sons of the count, Hans Moritz Graf von Brühl (1746-1811), received the manor and castle of Seifersdorf. The property was in debt. The castle was completely neglected over the years and almost uninhabitable. It served only as a grain store and residence for servants. The count and his wife Christine, called "Tina", temporarily lived in Wachau Castle and moved into the leaseholder's house in the manor in 1775. In 1781 the garden on the manor began to be turned into a park and the Seifersdorfer valley was designed by Tina Countess von Brühl (1756 -1816). Hans Moritz and Tina belong to the circle of friends of the Weimar classics around Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Anna Amalia von Weimar. They also visited them in Weimar and Karlsbad and put up a memorial for Goethe in the garden at the manor house and a memorial for Anna Amalia in the valley. Goethe wrote the Bänkelsängerlied, which is still available in the original, for the birthday of Hans Moritz Graf von Brühl.

The first castle - a tower hill castle - was probably built in the 12th century (first mentioned in 1191) from a lot of wood and few bricks. It will be built on an island in the middle of the dammed Deep Rift. After it was destroyed by fire, the second stone castle was described in 1208 - before the first mention of Seifersdorf as "Syfridisdorf" in 1335 in a letter from the Bishop of Meissen. After the castle men of the Wachau had built a knight's seat in the early Middle Ages, the von Haugwitz family came to Seifersdorf in the late Middle Ages. In 1461 Frederick the Meek enfeoffed his chancellor Georg von Haugwitz with Seifersdorf and in 1510 Christoph von Haugwitz received the fief. In 1531 he married Margarethe von Schlieben from Pulsnitz. The third castle was built from 1530 to 1535 under Christoph von Haugwitz as a residential castle in the style of the early Renaissance in place of the tower hill castle. In 1586 the Lords of Haugwitz lost almost all property in the Electorate of Saxony due to debts, and the manorial rule of Seifersdorf passed to Dietrich von Grünrod, who bought the castle. In 1605 his son Wolf Dietrich I built the church. The fourth castle was built from 1621 to 1627 as a conversion and extension by Wolf Dietrich II von Grünrod. This castle must have been a stately Renaissance building. From 1691 to 1698 Hans Georg von Grünrod carried out renovation work on the castle. This part, the fifth castle, no longer exists today. In 1818 the castle was rebuilt according to plans by Schinkel, among others, but possible ideas for the conversion can also be attributed to Carl von Brühl. The sixth castle that has been preserved to this day is therefore a "Schinkel building" in the neo-Gothic style. A brilliant theater hall was installed in the new north wing. The conversion was completed in 1826. Only then could the count's family move into the castle. In 1822 the plaque "A strong castle is our God" was attached to the south side of the castle. It is not known whether this was only the date of the external completion of the conversion according to Schinkel's plans or also the birthday present for Carl Graf von Brühl's 50th birthday.

We were lucky enough to catch a castle open day ahead of the upcoming 2025 closure. The approx. 1-hour guided tour gave us a lot of information about the many different lords of this castle, which has been rebuilt many times since the 12th century, and the more recent past after reunification, when it was to be sold and a castle association campaigned for the public access to remain. It is amazing what greats went in and out here, such as Schiller, Goethe, Körner, Caspar David Friedrich, etc. We also learned that the Prince Consort of the English Queen, Lord Mountbatton, came from the von Brühl line.

                                          Yes, correct @Karsten_Pe,
Renovation work will take place there until the end of 2025, and the castle will have very limited access:

"The castle has been closed since March 2024 due to renovations. However, we will continue to be on site and offer many events and tours in 2025. For questions about the castle, inquiries about external castle tours, planned events, etc., please contact us at [phone] or Info@schloss-seifersdorf.de."
