From the pulpit, the four-man crew was able to control the border closely and make out any refugees quickly. The tower is located on a hiking trail near the borderland museum Teistungen.

The renovated former watchtower of the GDR border troops on the Pferdeberg has also been open to visitors since 2012. From the almost fully equipped observation room at the top of the tower you have an excellent view of the former border strip and can thus authentically understand the visibility of the border guards of the time. Due to the steep metal stairs that have to be climbed, the tower can only be visited in guided groups by prior arrangement.

In the mid-1970s, the GDR border troops erected massive observation towers of the types "Btv 2 x 2" and "Btv 4 x 4" (abbreviation for "square observation tower" with a base area of 2 x 2 meters and 4 x 4 meters, respectively). They replaced the tower structures made of wood or round prefabricated concrete elements that had previously stood along the border, which were structurally less favorable. The relatively spacious "Btv 4 x 4" usually served as a command post for entire border sections. The tower located here, with its command post, is responsible for a 16.9 km long section. It begins at the road in the valley and ends in a southwesterly direction just before the town of Neuendorf/Eichsfeld. In addition to this tower, several "Btv 2 x 2" towers belong to this section. Their number depends on the terrain, as the aim was to create a visual connection between the towers.
