The monumental industrial building was built between 1927 and 1929 based on designs by the then in-house architect of the Berliner Städtische Elektrizitätswerke Aktiengesellschaft (BEWAG), Hans Müller.
The supporting steel skeleton was fitted with yellow clinker bricks. This makes the building look like a mixture of Brandenburg brick Gothic and expressionist modernism. The light control room was housed in a circular, glazed extension on the roof of the substation: this is where the urban area of Berlin was observed in the 1920s. The street lighting could be switched on and off depending on the lighting conditions.
