A beautiful root path leads past the Perlenbach stream by the Höfener Mühle (*formerly a restaurant) opposite. If you follow this path from the Mühlenweg, you will reach the forest path crossing Holländerhäuschen after approx. 300 m.

Perlenbach- and Fuhrtsbachtal belong - like some other neighboring valleys in the Rureifel - to the particularly valuable nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is estimated that these approximately 280 hectares of meadows were used for more than 600 years of producing hay for cattle in the area. With a special irrigation system - the so-called Flüxgräben - the hay meadows were fertilized in early spring with creek water rich in suspended matter. So over the centuries the daffodil-rich Bärwurzwiesen, flower-rich wet and swamp meadows and arnica-rich nebulas emerged.
The irrigation also served to increase the soil temperature, as the climate in the region is otherwise rather cool and humid. The annual mean temperature is only about six degrees and an average of 1150 mm of precipitation falls.

In the fifties, numerous valley meadows were reforested with spruce because it was no longer worthwhile to use hay - the Flüxgräben was forgotten. Little by little, the dark spruce stands left hardly any living space for the previously colorful splendor of the meadow flowers and the diversity of butterflies, beetles and birds. To save the area, it was placed under nature protection in 1976. Since then, it has served as a model nature conservation policy, as it is part of a German-Belgian cooperation between authorities, forest offices and nature conservation organizations. For example, the fallow meadows are again being used extensively by farmers, i.e. not fertilized and regularly mowed late in the year.

The two valleys of the Perlenbach and Fuhrtsbach, with a total area of 331 hectares, form a nature reserve, which is characterized by its fen vegetation and wet grassland fallow. In the Perlen- and Fuhrtsbachtal nature reserve there is a large variety of plants and animals, which have found ideal conditions here.
