The reindeer [reːn], [rɛn][1] or reindeer [ˈreːnˌtiːɐ], [ˈrɛnˌtiːɐ][2] (Rangifer tarandus) is a species of mammal in the deer family (Cervidae). It lives circumpolarly in the tundra in summer and in the taiga in winter in northern Eurasia and North America, as well as on Greenland and other Arctic islands. There are no wild reindeer herds at the North Cape, as the reindeer swim from the mainland to the island of Magerøya in the fall and overwinter there. They are then brought back to the mainland by boat in the spring. The reindeer seen at the North Cape are therefore part of a seasonal migration and are bred and kept by the Sami people.
