The Victory Column was built in 1874 and is located in the immediate vicinity of Schwerin Castle. It is to commemorate the fallen Mecklenburg soldiers in the Franco-German War of 1870/1871.
Gustav Willgohs created the victory column from captured French artillery. The bronze guns were melted down and poured into a mold to form the victory column.
