There was already a castle in Lauf in the 12th century, but it was destroyed at the beginning of the 14th century. It was only around 50 years later, namely in 1353, that the later Emperor Karl acquired the area on the Pegnitz and a few years later had a new imperial residence built on the site of the old castle. Since the emperor as the Bohemian king also bore the name Wenceslas, the castle soon became known as the Wenceslas Castle. Wenceslas, the national saint of Bohemia, is also shown as a portrait above the main gate of the castle.

You can explore the castle and its premises either on your own or as part of a guided tour.

Opening times: Info point: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Castle: Wednesday to Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on weekends 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lauf experienced its first heyday under the banner of the Bohemian lion. Based on the city survey, a diverse urban life developed: self-government and jurisdiction, crafts, markets and customs, church and school, social institutions. The urban character found its expression in the emblems of the seal, coat of arms and flag as well as in the various public buildings from the town hall, the shepherd's house, the shooting house to the "Fronveste", the city jail; not to forget the fortification with ditch, wall, towers and gates, which made running to a reasonably safe place.
