In 1290, the village of Sluis was granted city rights and, due to its location, became a fortress town in 1382. Just a few years later, Sluis was one of the most important trading cities, and ships of the German Hanseatic League, as well as cargo ships from Italian and Spanish-Portuguese ports, came to Sluis.
