The Pyramid of Etna in Santa Maria di Licodia, also known as the Calafato Tower, is one of the best preserved examples of the forty pyramids present in the Etna area.
The Pyramids of Etna are constructions whose origin and function are still the subject of debate among scholars.
The Calatafo Tower has a stepped pyramid structure with a rectangular plan made of lava stone. On the north-east side of the tower there is a double symmetrical staircase of fine workmanship that leads to the top of the tower where there is a walkable surface surrounded by stone seats located close to the external walls.
The tower is included in a privately owned land but is clearly visible from the road.
The 2018 earthquake caused a collapse in the structure.
