On January 24, 1931, one of three steam boilers exploded in a large sawmill here. The force of the explosion hurled debris, some as much as 300 meters away. After the accident, the sawmill was relocated to Stromnäs, having operated here since 1884, burned down and rebuilt in 1902, and was last renovated and expanded in 1927.
The cause was never determined. No one was injured, although a stoker was present.
Today, the first thing that catches your eye are the numerous logs still floating in the water and the enormous amounts of driftwood. These are the remains of the sawmill's quays. In a few places, the remains of foundations can still be seen in the shallow water.
