The "Healed Foundling"

In January 2007, hurricane "Kyrill" caused severe flooding, which partially uncovered this boulder 60 meters below its current location. Since erratic boulders are usually rounded off by transport in the ice, it was initially assumed that the stone had been created by human hands. Experts were also puzzled. It was only when it was uncovered (2008) that the full shape of the stone was revealed and a conclusive assessment was made possible. According to Professor Springhorn from the Detmold State Museum, these are “quartzite healing structures” that protrude from the surrounding rock as ridges due to their relative hardness.

Such boulders are extremely rare to find, because many favorable factors must occur in order for such a structure to survive thousands of kilometers of transport in the ice. The healing structures developed similar to stalactites, whereby the cracks caused by earthquakes "grow together" over the course of thousands of years due to deposits from the flowing water.
