Itsamia, one of the best places to observe sea turtles. The ADSEI Moheli Association has a few guest bungalows there.
Moheli is home to two species of sea turtle: the green sea turtle (Cheolonia mydas) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). One of the best nesting beaches is located in Itsamia. Here, you can witness the 300 kg female turtles laboriously pull themselves up the beach, dig a hole, and lay their eggs in the sand.
Almost every night, all year round, the turtles emerge from the waters of the Indian Ocean to lay their eggs deep in the sand. Sixty days later, up to 200 baby turtles climb out of their sandy nest and run down into the water.
After migrating thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean for 20 years, the females who survive their long journey return to the same beach to lay their first clutch of eggs!
