One of Halmstad's oldest and most interesting houses is Twistens Gård, located here at Storgatan 38. It has served as a town hall, pub, school, Systembolaget company, and private residence, among other things.

The house was built
The vaulted ceiling in the basement may date back to the Middle Ages, but the main part of the building was probably constructed after the great city fire of 1619. It is an elaborate stone house that dominated Halmstad in the 17th century, while the other buildings consisted mainly of cheaper half-timbered houses.

Johan Twist
Little is known about the early history of the building. There are theories that the house belonged to the Franciscan monastery at Lilla Torg, but these are not entirely confirmed. What we do know, however, is that the owner, who gave the house its name, moved in in the 1660s. Johan Twist was a merchant who had immigrated from Lübeck. He traded extensively with Holland.
