The church was built from 1912 to 1913 to a design by the Darmstadt architect Theodor Sohms in a style combination of elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Art Nouveau and Heimatstil. The Patrozinium was taken over by the medieval church of St. Lawrence, which had served the Catholic community since 1846 as a church and in 1919 demolished. During the Second World War in 1945, the church was damaged and rebuilt after the war simplified.

St. Lawrence, to whom the Wriezen church is consecrated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was archdeacon of the Pope and had been asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the treasure to the church. Laurentius asked for three days, but distributed the church property among the poor inhabitants of Rome and after the agreed time came with the poor to the emperor to present them as the treasure of the church. Thereupon he was martyred to death, legend has it that he was alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of St. Lawrence - roasted over coals. He is said to have been of good cheer and told his executioner, on the one hand, whether he would not turn it around.

The feast day of Laurentius in the calendar of saints is on August 10th.

The Catholic Church of St. Laurentius was built from 1912 to 1913 by Th. Sohm and consecrated on September 21, 1913. The construction was necessary because the Catholic community had grown significantly due to Polish reapers. That is why a Polish-speaking pastor was hired. Saint Lawrence was the patron saint of the poor and lepers.
