The rock caves are a special attraction on the Muschelkalk steep slope of the Ilm near Buchfart. Due to their idyllic location, but above all because of their history, they are of particular importance: the caves and excavations still visible today were probably driven into the mountain since the 10th century. Neolithic and Bronze Age soil finds indicate an even older settlement of this plant. It probably once served as a refuge. The fortified caves could also have been used as sanctuaries, when in 531 Saxony and Franconia together defeated the Thuringian kingdom.
